Master's programs in Law

Master 2 International law and organizations

(Supervised by Paolo Palchetti and Ioannis Prezas)

This program of study and research devoted to international law and international organizations provides students with a complete cursus of theoretical and practical studies, in both the general concepts and in more specialized disciplines of international law.

This program aims to harness the vitality and initiative of its students. It attracts students from a broad range of countries around the world, ensuring a spirit of open-mindedness and a global outlook. The program's extensive network of alumni is the framework for ongoing ties between past and future graduates.

The prime objective of this course of study is to train jurists who are well versed in general public international law and in its specialized branches, and with a solid knowledge of its doctrine. These graduates are equipped to deploy a critical approach to international norms and institutions, and to work in both French and English.

Law - Industrial strategy and public policy in defense

(Supervised by Stéphane Rodrigues)

This master's program introduces an array of analytical tools designed for leaders and managers with broad general functions. These tools provide keys to understanding the strategic positions occupied by public and private institutions in defense and the arms industry. Students are trained to use these tools to construct their knowledge and apply it in practical ways. Case studies complete the cursus.

Graduates are equipped to assume executive functions in public and private enterprises in the arms and defense sectors and related activities.

Master's programs in History

Expertise in armed conflict

(Supervised by Hervé Drévillon)

This program enables students to understand the long-term dynamics of conflicts and opens them to the multiple disciplines that contribute to the study of armed conflict, including international law, geopolitics, political science, art history (in particular film and video) within the framework of war studies.

At the end of this cursus students will have a firm grasp of historical method and will be able to make use of its critical dimension. Most importantly they will be able to apply their writing skills to the specific needs of a broad range of professions and fields.

History of international relations and the global world: the Americas, Asia, Europe

The master's program in international relations and overseas action was created in 2005 by Université Paris 1 Panthéon–Sorbonne to prepare students for a diverse range of job functions that address international issues.

Students acquire:

Multidisciplinary training over two years,

Pre-professional skills confirmed by mandatory internships,

Intensive language training,

Two types of specialization: by region and by sector (cultural relations and policy, or the business world).

In their first year students have a study abroad period in a European capital.

Master's degree in International Relations and Overseas Action (MRIAE)

(Supervised by Laurence Badel)

This program is a high-level pre-professional training program affiliated with the Sorbonne School of History. The multidisciplinary cursus in international relations aims to give students wide-ranging competence, with broad knowledge of other countries, mastery of at least two foreign languages, and a regional specialization.

The two-year program is open to students who have completed a Licence 3 program (or equivalent). The cursus is based on courses shared with the Magistère program. It differs from the Magistère in that it offers a degree in two years, with a very strong pre-professional component (at least two months in internship during the first year, and one semester in the second year). Graduates are awarded a Professional Master's Degree, a diploma accredited by the French State.

Master's degree in Geography

Dynamics of emerging and developing economies (DynPED)

(Supervised by Géraud Magrin et Thierry Sanjuan)

The DynPED program devoted to the South countries offers two paths of study, one focusing on research and the other on professional applications.

The cursus is designed to meet the needs of students and of the job market. Students enrolled in this two-year program of higher education acquire a solid technical knowledge base, as well as general training in geography and territorial sciences and a research-oriented approach to development issues.

The professional pathway offers training in development projects that have a territorial dimension. This specialization distinguishes the program from other master's programs that are limited to purely local development and infrastructure or to a specific aspect of development (rural, urban, geopolitical).

The main objective is to enable students to analyze the territorial issues and dynamics at work in emerging and developing economies and accompany projects accordingly.

Master's program in Geopolitics

(Supervised by Sophie Hou)

Student demand for teaching that addresses the new global geopolitics is steadily on the rise. The classic approach in this field posited a political and military opposition between the major nations of the world or between blocs of countries. This program covers the transformation of the national and international context and the changes in politics, the economy, and social affairs.

Three pathways of study are proposed:

  • Professional pathway: Six units of general studies, four tools designed for geopolitical work, a professional internship, leading up to a written report.
  • Research pathway: Eight units of general studies, two tools for geopolitical work, an introduction to research methods, and a research paper.
  • Work–study pathway: Eight units of general studies, four tools for geopolitical work, specific courses in parallel to company internships during the second quarter.

Master 2 Global risk and crisis management

(Supervised by Marie-Hélène De Laender and Paul Durand)

This program aims to train professionals who will be able to work in companies, public administration and local authorities on issues of risk anticipation and management, whether they be natural, technological, financial, geopolitical or security-related. More broadly, graduates will be equipped to handle crises of all sorts. Throughout the year students take part in exercises held by our partners in large corporations and the Gendarmerie, and organize such exercises themselves for companies or government ministries.

Master's programs in Political science

International conflict and crises

(Supervised by Yves Buchet de Neuilly and Gregory Daho)

This specialized cursus in international relations, instituted in 1977, is aimed at students with a solid background in social sciences, in particular in political science. The International conflict and crises program combines theoretical studies and methodological approaches. Students acquire tools to investigate, explain and analyze international relations, crises and conflicts in the contemporary world in preparation for research posts and for international careers.

The cursus is recognized as one of the most outstanding programs of higher education in the field of international relations. All essential aspects of international relations are covered, culminating in an in-depth study of civil war, international security and conflict resolution. This framework aims to renew the analytical paradigms used in international relations, and to furnish students with the methods of empirical research.

Comparative politics of Africa and the Middle East

(Supervised by Assia Boutaleb and Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle)

The Université Paris 1 Panthéon–Sorbonne master's program in comparative politics of Africa and the Middle East is the only political science program in France devoted exclusively to analysis of contemporary society in Africa and the Mediterranean region.

The program is affiliated with the Institut des mondes africains (IMAF) and the Centre européen de sociologie et de science politiques (CESSP), as well as with the activities of the journal Politique africaine, with the aim of developing critical analysis and understanding of the political issues at stake on the African continent and in the Mediterranean region.

The cursus looks at social, economic and political phenomena as they play out in the specific historical context of African and Mediterranean societies, while deciphering their meaning both in this framework and in relation to the rest of the world. This analysis goes well beyond relations with former colonial powers, to include the dynamics of migratory movement, circulation among the countries of the South, and of course the international organizations present and, first and foremost, the international protagonists of development, the economy and "security."
